We know behind every cluttered room is a story, often of trauma, loss, grief or fear, not laziness or lack of care. Hoarding disorder is a mental health condition, affecting over one million people across the UK.
We recognise that for many people living with hoarding disorder, home is not a safe or restful place. Instead, it becomes a source of distress, shame and isolation. So, when someone is ready to ask for support and help, we want to be able to offer it.
Over the last year at Red Squirrel, we have faced increasing requests from individuals living with hoarding. With cuts in funding, the already limited resources have dwindled further. That is why we are raising funds to run the Buried in Treasures course, a 16-week, evidence-based group programme designed specifically to support people living with hoarding disorder. We want to remove the financial barrier to getting help for people experiencing hoarding, in Hampshire.

The Buried in Treasures course is grounded in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and we have added some Occupational Therapy to provide a compassionate, practical approach to change. Participants are supported to understand the thoughts and emotions behind their hoarding, develop decision-making skills, and take small, realistic steps towards lasting improvement.
Crucially, they do this together, in a supportive group where they feel understood rather than judged. We have run this course before so know the benefits:
“It’s the first time I’ve been in a space where people understand.”
“The group gives me hope that I can change.”
Research shows that more than 70% of participants experience significant improvements in how they think, feel and act around their possessions.
Crowdfunding to Remove The Barrier: Cost
The reality is that many people who need this course simply cannot afford it. It costs £375 per person to run the full programme, including:
Trained facilitators
Venue hire
Specialist workbooks and materials
Our goal is to raise £6,000 so we can offer subsidised places to people who would otherwise miss out. Every donation makes a tangible difference:
£25 supports one weekly session
£50 provides course materials for one participant
£100 covers room hire
£375 fully funds one life-changing place
Together, We Can Make Change Possible
Hoarding disorder thrives on anxiety, fear, shame and isolation. The Buried in Treasures Course offers something different: connection, understanding and hope. By donating or sharing our campaign, you are helping someone take the first steps towards improving their health, wellbeing, and a safe place to live.
No one should have to face hoarding disorder alone. No one should have to be rejected when reaching out for help. Together, we can support lasting change.
Please donate today and help make this course accessible to those who need it most. Go to our Crowdfunding page today to donate.
